I Don’t Care If You Wet The Bed

To All the Ships at Sea-

I don’t care if you’re a Democrat, Republican, an Independent, a Communist, or you wet the bed. Let’s be clear on something – inflation is 2.9%. It almost never gets smaller than that. The reason the cost of meat, eggs, milk, and gasoline is high is because of five major corporations controlling the world. It’s not inflation.

The Company Mondelez International, for instance controls so many different products They make a nutritious fig bar for people who want something sweet and not gain much weight. The package is approximately 35% larger than the two little fig cookies. Wonder why? They not only raised the price but in some cases by doubling or more, thats not enough, they made the product smaller. But you say it’s the same calories. Yes. They just added a little bit more sugar.

Many people from Germany, France, Greece, Canada, and the United States, or wherever, are being controlled and manipulated by major corporations. Now if you are fortunate enough to own stock in some of these corporations, you may be kicking ass and taking names. However, majority of these people don’t have a way of making money in the stock market.

One of the oldest corporations in the United States was Hershey. As a child in the West Village, which was a long time ago, once a week my grandfather would take me to a candy store the size of a medium closet in a high rise today. He would buy me a Hershey bar for 5 cents. That Hershey bar would last me until the following week, when he’d take me back for another Hershey bar. That candy bar was ginormous! Yes, I was a little thing at the time, but I’m equating not only the size, the quality, and the nickel back in the 40’s- which is not the same as a nickel in the 2020’s – I got it!

When I was dealing with a year’s worth of chemo, once a week I would buy myself a giant Hershey bar and that would last me, believe it or not, a whole week. The cost of that bar was approximately $2.75. Not so much, it was reasonable (dark chocolate by the way). Fast forward to today, that same Hershey bar (not the same) is now $4.20 a bit more than a single Hershey bar was 25 years ago. Really works great if you own Hershey stock, I know.

Basically what I’m saying is this – these corporations are putting us up against the wall and killing us. I am a capitalist–by the way, and I don’t wet the bed (you’ll have to figure the rest out about me from the above other choices). Before anybody blames somebody for inflation, you have to study it.

Prime rib 20 years ago was $7.99 a pound. It’s now upwards of $32 a pound. When you ask the rancher, the rancher will tell you they’re not making any money. When you ask the slaughterhouses, they’ll tell you the same. You ask the butcher, he tells you the same. I want to know who the hell is making the money?

I’ve been out to dinner with five wonderful friends that are all affluent, and except for one (you know who you are), the meal would be chicken, turkey, pork, pasta, soup. My one dear friend puts out a prime rib to die for. The majority of people are trying to make things go a bit further.

I sometimes wonder how the majority of people can actually get through the night on their two, in some cases 3, job salaries. You better believe they’re not buying stock in these huge, multi-national corporations.

One way or another, we’re all going to pay for it in the final analysis. Maybe I’ll just have to go on a diet…

I don’t remember who the writer was who said you can never go home again. Whoever wrote it was certainly right.  I was born and bred in the West Village on 63 Carmine street.  At the ripe old age of four, I went to NYU for the first time to see my father graduate.  This was of course, after he served 4 years in the U. S. Army Air Force as a waist gunner on b-17 flying fortress. With the combination of “the rent being too high” and 9/11, JoAnne and I made a decision to no longer keep our studio space full time in Manhattan.  I must say, we still consider ourselves NYC photographers as it was our original base.

We have a dear friend who is an entertainer by the name of Ronny Whyte who was playing at Pangea in New York this past Wednesday and we decided to go in to see him perform.  I took advantage of the time there to revisit my old neighborhood and take some of the rust off my street photography.  Twenty five years ago, I was quite good at street photography – not sure I am anymore!  If you don’t use it – you lose it!  Washington Square really did not change much since I was there last.  Great music, people playing sports, lovers and families, dogs and people of all ages just enjoying being outdoors.  On our way to the East Village we bumped into the NYU Stern business school’s pro Palestinian demonstration.  My blog is not about politics.  Did I say that?  I’m pro Israel and at the same time I’m not against Palestine and I’m certainly anti-Hamas!  For all the years I’ve been to Israel my brothers and sisters would say they are all cousins and I sometimes can’t tell them apart.  However, the terrorists are different!  Over many years of being a photojournalist, I’ve only been stopped maybe 3 or 4 times either by security, the military, or the police. I’ve never once been stopped by a 19 or 20 year old child who got in my face on a  New York City sidewalk which is known as a public conveyance.  If you’re on the sidewalk you may be photographed for better or worse. If I was to photograph someone and was invading their personal space I would stop.  However, it was funny because these people were demonstrating but yet did not want to be photographed?  To have some little shit challenge me was unacceptable by anyone’s standards.  We stared at each other for maybe 2 minutes and with his mask on, I could only see his eyes.  There was no doubt he was not Palestinian or an Israeli!  He probably was not an NYU student or for that matter not even American!  I decided not to cause a riot at my father’s former alma mater.  I believe in the first amendment of free speech and believe I also have a right to make photographs.   A half block away there were three police officers and a Sergeant.  I asked the Sergeant his thoughts about me making a photograph on the street and he said of course it was okay.  I casually mentioned the fact that I was blocked by their umbrellas several times.  The Sergeant offered to escort me back to make some photos.  At that point I said no.  We spoke for 5 minutes. The irony was the Sergeant happened to be a muslim Arab.  There is no doubt, my father is rolling over in his grave.  My dad had a doctorate degree.  If he was there and that piece of shit blocked him or got in his face, I’m pretty sure he would have bitch slapped him and God knows what would have happened after that.  I guess I did not inherit all my fathers nerve and we’re living in a different time.  I’m sharing some photos of my day.  It’s been a while since I posted a blog.

Later in the evening we enjoyed listening to Ronny Whyte along with the two talented musician who accompanied him.  It was also good getting together at the club with friends Steve, Mary, Diane, Quinn, and Errol. Ronny is a great entertainer.   An added bonus all around Pangea was to seeing so many framed beautiful Alan Kaplan pastels adorning the walls.

It Never Snows in Amalfi

Hi to all the Ships at Sea,

SONY DSC

Both JoAnne and I are putting together the cover art for our new, exciting, travel adventure, photographic DVD. Yes, I am the King of the run-on sentence, sorry. The above photo JoAnne took of me with one of my students in Amalfi, which is helping the photographer re-think the options that he may have. Let’s remember one thing, when I’m teaching a workshop, when I’m giving a lecture on a TV show/internet TV show, what you’re getting is my opinion, it is not necessarily a fact and it is not cast in bronze, brass or gold, it’s just my opinion. Because I am one the luckiest people in the world, my opinion has been formed with the knowledge of some of the greatest photographers in the world, W. Gene Smith, Carl Mydans, Alfred Eisenstaedt, John Dominis, Irving Penn and the list goes on and on. I believe artists, regardless of the medium, whether it be oil ,watercolor, pen and ink, poetry, a novel the blues or the jazz, no one goes out with the idea of copying someone else. But “OUR” ability to learn from each other is critical, it’s simple communication. It’s really not about F-stops and apertures. It’s really how we see, what we see, what we look for-and then go to the next level. You can think of photography, videography and filmmaking as probably the most important thing in the world of communication. And oh my God, let’s not forget the Ernest Hemingway’s, the Budd Schulberg’s, the Elia Kazan’s, the Al Maysles. For most of us it will just be plain fun and in this complicated, sometimes bizarre world, fun and a light moment may just keep us alive a bit longer. This blog started out very light and airy and I have no idea how it got so serious.

Health and Happiness to Everyone, Great Shooting.
